In late 2017 I booked a tour of abandoned places in Detroit, including a church, school, broadcast school, and a Fisher body plant. I returned in June, 2019 and visited the same church, an abandoned facility near the East Market area, and the former Kelvinator and American Motors Corporation headquarters which was last used as a Chrysler-Jeep testing facility. Additionally, I visited The Heidelberg Project, an long-term art installation/project by Tyree Guyton.
I typically avoid tours of any kind in relation to my photography, but if it’s your first time heading into this type of situation, I’d highly recommend not diving in alone. There are too many variables ranging from structurally unsound portions of buildings to desperate people hunting for scrap metal to steal. There is safety in numbers and previous experience. If you’re looking for a group in Detroit, I would recommend Motor City Photography Workshops as a starting point.
